Health Artifacts

Samples of public health coursework

These artifacts, presented both in English and my target language (Spanish), are examples of coursework that I completed during my time at Clemson. Listed below are the artifacts themselves, along with a brief description of the project, what I learned by completing the artifact, and applications of each work to my interests and career.

This assignment allowed me to engage in a topic that directly correlates with my interests in
food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural health. Through this project, I became aware of
the challenges faced by rural communities such as limited access to resources, knowledge, and markets. I researched culturally-appropriate sustainable practices in
specific communities in Ecuador and took note of methods that were already being used so I could understand the potential effectiveness of certain methods in these communities. For example, agroecology is growing in rural areas in Ecuador because it aligns with indigenous beliefs about natural resources. Because it is both effective and culturally accepted, this program is sustainable. This artifact is relevant to future potential projects because it shows I am able to combine theory with real-world scenarios to increase the effectiveness of these projects. Creating this artifact also gave me a global perspective on issues that affect rural areas in places outside the United States.

This analysis of the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goal #3 in Rwanda proved to be a valuable learning experience. I gained a deeper knowledge of SDG 3 in an international context, including relating the current state of health and well-being in Rwanda to the nation’s social, political, and historical factors. I discuss the main contributors to poor health outcomes in Rwanda, which are infectious diseases and poor maternal health. The research methods I used for this artifact are transferable and can be applied in other global health initiatives or policy-making situations. This project amplified my interest in global health policy and international development. For example, in this artifact I discussed collaborating with other SDGs, creating prevention techniques, and managing adequate treatments. Collaborating across different sections of healthcare is essential to achieving a multifaceted issue such as improving health and well-being. By studying these issues in Rwanda and how they can be mitigated, I will now have a better understanding of SDGs overall and how they apply to other parts of the world.
